In April and October 1848, numerous notices appeared in British newspapers declaring Patrick Matthew to be a bankrupt. These notices advise creditors of times and places of meetings to discuss Matthew’s financial situation.
Until recently, the reasons for Matthew’s bankruptcy were a mystery, but this mystery is now solved. Earlier speculation that it was something to do with Matthew’s involvement in Railway Companies, the Scots New Zealand Land Company, or the Ayrshire Malleable Iron Company have been shown to be largely unfounded.
