Matthew (1871-03-07)

France, Germany, and Europe The Scotsman, Tuesday 7 March 1871, p.5 col.6 (pdf image)

(Letter dated Mar 3 1871, published Mar 7 1871)
Matthew argues once again that France is the aggressor and Germany is the victim in the Franco-Prussian War. Matthew ends by berating the press: “that anti-German portion of the British press which panders to promote jealousy and mistrust of our parent country and best friend [i.e. Germany], which by every dishonest means – by gross misrepresentation of facts – endeavours to sow enmity against Germany, is Britain’s worst enemy.”
