Anonymous. Notes on Conifers No. XIII, Sequoia (Wellingtonia) gigantra. Gardeners’ Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette (15 Dec 1866), p.1191

(Article printed in issue of Dec 15)
The writer (signing himself “A. M.”) notes that the introduction of the first sequoia to Europe was not done by Mr Lobb but by “Mr. John D. Matthew, son of Patrick Matthew, Esq. of Gourdie Hill, near Errol”. The piece refers to a letter from John Matthew to his father, dated 10th July 1853 and “published in extenso in this Journal in the following year (10th June, 1854)”
