Brief mention is given of “a revised and enlarged edition (the fourth) of Mr Darwin’s Origin of Species (Murray), which now comprises an historical introduction to the whole subject, a classified list of the principal additions, some of great importance, that have been made to this edition. Full justice is done to Mr. P. Matthew, who in 1831, and in our own columns in 1860, put forth views very similar to those of Mr. Darwin.”
In fact, the Historical Sketch was first carried in the third edition of On the Origin of Species, published in 1861.
