Matthew’s ideas are laid out in two short sections in the main text, and two sections in the appendix (one short and one much longer). His ideas are most clearly laid out in the appendix, so these are listed first (Excerpts 1 and 2). Note that all but the last of these excerpts were also reproduced verbatim in the letter that Matthew wrote in the Gardeners’ Chronicle in April 1860 (after he’d learned of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species).
