A brief letter from Matthew wishing to correspond with another correspondent on the question of how to “correct the unwholesomeness of the surroundings of cities of ancient times”, in particular in relation to those located near river deltas. The discussion of vegetable mould and malaria is more easily understood if one also reads Matthew’s article of March 1872.
