Whether coincidence or not, Matthew contributed a considerable body of articles to the Farmer’s Magazine and the Gardeners’ Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette in the years following the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. These included clarifications on his ideas regarding evolution, on the transition of man from savage to civilized state, the existence of design and purpose in the universe, and the Sun as a vital force in progressive evolution. They also include many articles on the “greatest national evil” of restrictive land tenancy, and its negative effects on national agricultural production via the depletion of healthy “vegetable mould”.

Where possible, I’ve ordered articles by the date when written. Where this is not available, I’ve ordered by the date when published.

Note that Matthew’s exchange with Darwin in the pages of the Gardeners’ Chronicle and Agricultural Gazette is not placed here but rather in the Matthew and Darwin: Letters in the Gardeners’ Chronicle section.  Also the review of On Naval Timber and Arboriculture by the same journal is not here but in the On Naval Timber: Reviews section.
