Matthew continued to write about evolution and related subjects throughout 1861, in amongst writings on purely agricultural matters. He also started to write extensively on the “greatest national evil” of restrictive land tenancy, and its negative effects on national agricultural production via the depletion of healthy “vegetable mould”.
